During deer season, I’m a hunting widow.

Friday night, October 21, 2010, I received a call from my husband, Joe, telling me he was coming home early from his hunting trip. After we discussed his leaving at night would require packing in the dark, he decided to wait until morning. Since he awoke early on Friday morning without an alarm, he would not set an alarm for Saturday morning, saying, “If God wants me to leave early, He will wake me and I’ll leave for home.”

Saturday morning without Joe in the house started like all others. Being the first one up, I poured a cup of coffee, opened my Bible to spend quiet time with God before the busy day began. The quiet lasted about 10 minutes before my 8-year-old, James, came bee-bopping down the hall, football in one hand, ready to start the day.

We drank coffee while I cooked breakfast. Josh, my teenager, typically likes to sleep late on Saturdays, but today he was up earlier than usual. The three of us enjoyed breakfast and then sat sipping coffee while discussing plans for Halloween. James was bitin’ at the bit to go outside to play, but we have a rule in our house – “You have to do what you gotta do before you can do what you wanna do.” In adhering to our rule, I sent the boys downstairs to clean their playroom before any outside fun.

Ten minutes later James came back upstairs. “Mom, do you have to be in church to ask Jesus into your heart?” I replied, “Absolutely not.”

“Well, then I wanna’ do it now.” Kneeling with my son, we prayed the prayer of salvation. It is a precious moment I will never forget.

“Can I go tell Josh?” he asked and I replied, “James, your life just changed forever. You should tell everyone.” I could see the excitement on his face!

Before lunchtime, the boys asked to go fishing in the pond across the street, something we’ve done as a family many times. We loaded the tackle box, cooler, fishing rods, and snacks in the car. James drove the 4wheeler, and Josh and I headed down the driveway in the car as we met Joe coming home.

When I asked why he was home early, he explained how he just could not shake the feeling he needed to come home, spend time with his family. I told him the boys were going fishing and he said “Let’em go. I’ll catch up with’em after I sight-in my bow.”

Within 15 minutes Joe was across the street, fishing with the boys. I was inside, cleaning house, but wishing I was outside enjoying the beautiful day.

I was busy folding clothes when I heard tires screeching, a horn blowing, and then a thump. I looked out the window, thinking it sounded like a car accident. No sooner had that thought crossed my mind, my phone rang. It was a neighbor across the street. “Cindy, get down here, James has been hit!”

Dropping the phone, I jumped in the car and sped down the driveway, cutting through a field to get to James as quickly as possible. When I arrived, James was lying on the side of the road. Joe was by his side, praying out loud in a trembling voice. My son’s right leg was completely split open from knee to ankle, bones sticking out. It was the worst thing I’d ever seen. Kneeling down next to his little face, I heard him say, “Mom, I’m so sorry. I didn’t look both ways. I’m so, so sorry. Will you please forgive me?”

I started praying. I have no idea what I prayed, other than crying out to God to please save my child. Joe was praying for strength for James to be able to handle whatever was coming.
James laid there being brave, never shedding a tear. Amazingly, he stayed alert and never went into shock. He apologized to me, Joe, and each paramedic assisting him.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you & help you. I will hold you up with My victorious right hand.” ~ Isaiah 41:10

The Toyota Tundra, going 45 miles an hour, hit the 4wheeler James was riding, pushing it 28 feet, and then throwing James an additional 30 feet from that point. The impact should have caused substantial injuries and James should not have survived. But miraculously, all he suffered was a severely broken leg. And the miracles just kept coming, one right after another.

It is a day that I will never forget. Not because of the accident or because Joe stripped off his shirt to make a tourniquet which saved James’ leg, and probably not because of the bumpy ambulance ride to the hospital. The reason I will never forget is because on this day my son was saved twice. Once, he was saved by the blood of Jesus and two and half hours later, by the Grace of God.

My Sweet Baby James underwent four surgeries within 10 days of the accident. Today he is healed from the wounds of the accident and in time, the scars will barely be visible. But what will always remain from this accident is the testimony of God’s grace that will touch, save, and impact lives for the rest of his days.
