A Song for Your Heart
🎵 Listen to "For the Journey"
Before reading today's devotional, take a moment to listen to this song inspired by Ephesians 5:15 and the lessons we can learn from the hummingbird. Let its words prepare your heart for the message God has placed before you.
“As hummingbirds return again and again to the nectar that sustains them, we are invited to return daily to Christ, our source of life and strength.” Sandi
For the Journey | Life Lessons from the Hummingbirds
One of the smallest visitors to our garden is also one of the busiest. Every spring, hummingbirds return as though they have memorized the map tucked inside God's creation. One of my favorite early morning pastimes is sitting on my porch, watching the hummingbirds gather around the feeders.
They hover with remarkable precision, completely focused on drawing every drop of nectar they can. They are not simply enjoying a sweet treat. They are fueling their tiny bodies for the journey ahead.
Every sip serves a purpose. It sustains them for the journey.
As I watch them, I cannot help but wonder if we approach our spiritual lives, our journey, with the same determination.
Do we seek God's presence with that kind of intention? Do we linger in His Word long enough to receive the nourishment our souls need, or do we rush away before our hearts have truly been filled?
It is easy to confuse activity with purpose. Our calendars fill, errands multiply, and responsibilities compete for attention. We can spend an entire day going and doing without ever asking whether we are moving in the direction God desires.
Paul's words in Ephesians 5:15 gently interrupt our momentum: "Be very careful, then, how you live."
He is not merely telling us to avoid mistakes. He is inviting us to live deliberately. Wisdom begins when we recognize that every conversation, every decision, every interruption, and every ordinary moment carries eternal significance.
The hummingbird wastes little energy chasing what can't sustain it. It instinctively returns to the nectar that gives it strength for the next part of its journey.
God's Word is our spiritual nourishment for our journey. Through Scripture, prayer, and time dwelling in His presence, He provides exactly what we need for today's challenges and tomorrow's unknowns.
We were never meant to travel on yesterday's strength. Life is more than reaching the finish line. It is about becoming the person God is shaping along the way. Every season teaches us something if we are willing to pay attention. Every step of obedience leaves a testimony for those who follow behind.
There's a saying: "Life is not about the destination. It's about the journey." Most of us understand that it means to live fully, cherish the people we love, and make each day count. But I believe both the journey and the destination matter. The road we're traveling eventually leads us to our final destination.
Today is another gift from the Lord. We cannot relive yesterday, and tomorrow is not promised. But today is in our hands. Like the hummingbird who faithfully returns to the source that sustains it, may we seek Christ each day, allowing Him to fill us with the wisdom and strength we need for our journey.
Pause & Reflect
- Where have I allowed busyness to replace purposeful living?
- What daily habit would help me walk more wisely with Christ?
- If someone watched the journey of my life, would they see evidence that I am following Jesus?
Where Do We Go From Here?
Perhaps the next time we catch ourselves hurrying from one task to another, we will think of the hummingbird. Though its wings beat faster than the eye can follow, it never forgets where its strength is found. Again and again, it returns to the nectar that was provided for its journey.
Are we any different? Every day asks something of us and we cannot meet those demands on yesterday's strength or borrowed faith. We need fresh grace, fresh wisdom, and fresh time in the presence of the One who faithfully sustains us.
This week, let's linger a little longer with the Lord. Open His Word before the noise of the day crowds our thoughts. Sit quietly in prayer, even if only for a few moments, and allow Him to steady our heart. As we walk through the ordinary moments of our day, ask Him to help us notice where He is leading and to give us the courage to follow.
Our journey is not measured by how quickly we arrive, but by how faithfully we walk with Christ along the way. When we remain close to Him, every step, no matter how small, becomes part of a life that truly counts.
The Prayer of our Heart
Lord, may our lives reflect Your love in every season. Like the hummingbird faithfully following the path You designed, help us trust Your direction, one step at a time. Let each day become an offering of worship, and may our journey leave a lasting testimony of Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise. Ephesians 5:15 NIV.
Life rarely unfolds exactly as we imagine. Like the hummingbird, we may only see the flower directly in front of us, but God sees the entire landscape. He knows where we have been, where we are now, and where He is leading us next. When we surrender our plans and trust His direction, we discover that His purposes are always greater than anything we could have arranged ourselves. Before moving on, even if you listened to this song at the beginning, take time again. I wrote this song, For the Journey, especially for your devotional time. Allow its message to remind you that God's plan is always greater than our own.
