Music Through the Years

Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, I learned to read music and play the piano, and I often played by ear as well. Over the years, I sang solos while accompanying myself on the piano and occasionally wrote songs for special family occasions. Today, while I use modern technology to help bring my lyrics to life, my love for music and storytelling continues to shape every song I share.

Where the Music Began

Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, I learned to read music and play the piano, and I often played by ear as well. But before I was even tall enough to sit comfortably at a piano, I discovered the joy of making music.

Near our home was a small country church that always kept its doors unlocked. I would slip inside, sit at the piano, and sing to the empty pews. I had no idea that the pastor was sometimes quietly listening from outside the door. When he told my parents what he had witnessed, he was delighted that I loved music and welcomed me to continue playing whenever I wanted.

My parents later bought me a used 1906 piano, and I began taking lessons from a dear lady in our rural community. I would ride my bicycle to her home, where she would prepare supper while listening to me practice from the John Thompson piano books. Those early lessons, along with hours spent playing by ear, became the foundation of my lifelong love for music.

The old piano still sits in my home today. It has traveled with me through many seasons of life and even carries a few reminders of those journeys, including a broken leg from one of its moves. Yet it remains a treasured reminder of where the music began.

This piano built in 1906 by Christman Sons has been part of my life for decades. My parents bought it for me when I was six years old. At the time, even though it was a used piano, the cost was a sacrifice my parents made to purchase this piano. It was a gift of love.

It has traveled from house to house and through many seasons of life. The ivory from several keys is missing, it is scratched and the finish is worn. One leg was broken during a move years ago, yet I never had the heart to replace it. The bench, stored in our barn, fell apart years ago.

Like people, this piano carries the marks of time while continuing to remind me where the journey began.
