Their scent brings back memories of childhood days for many of us.\u00a0\u00a0But with all their beauty, roses seems to attract the most pests and damaging insects of any of my garden plants. One of the first challenges\u00a0I notice each year is the Sawfly Larvae.<\/p>\n<h4>Sawfly Larvae\u00a0in the\u00a0Springtime<\/h4>\n<p>In the spring, Sawflies (insect of the wasp family) make their appearance in late April or early May, before the Japanese Beetles. The sawfly larvae (resembles green worms)\u00a0is what does the damage.\u00a0They will not\u00a0kill a rosebush if detected early, but they will, however, turn your beautiful plant into a skeleton almost overnight.\u00a0You will find the leaves have been\u00a0devoured, leaving behind veins and stems.\u00a0Early detection is\u00a0your best line of defense, so grab that cup of coffee and take a morning stroll, checking your plants for pests and diseases. Pay\u00a0close attention to new leaves, buds, and the underside of the leaves where you will often see\u00a0the first signs of a threat.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wikipedia, <em>some larvae look like <a title=\"Caterpillar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caterpillar\">caterpillars<\/a> (the larvae of moths and butterflies), with some notable differences; (1) they have six or more pairs of <a title=\"Proleg\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proleg\">prolegs<\/a> (sometimes greatly reduced and difficult to see) on the <a title=\"Abdomen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abdomen\">abdomen<\/a>, while caterpillars have five pairs or fewer, (2) they have two <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Simple eyes in arthropods\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simple_eyes_in_arthropods\">stemmata<\/a> instead of a caterpillar&#8217;s six, (3) caterpillars (except for a tiny minority) always have the two first abdominal segments legless, and (4) sawfly larvae have an invariably smooth head capsule with no cleavage lines, while lepidopterous caterpillars bear an inverted &#8220;Y&#8221; or &#8220;V&#8221; (adfrontal suture). Typical sawfly larvae are <a title=\"Herbivore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herbivore\">herbivorous<\/a>, the group feeding on a wide range of plants. Individual species, however, are often quite specific in their choice of plants used for food. The larvae of various species exhibit <a title=\"Leaf miner\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leaf_miner\">leaf-mining<\/a>, leaf &#8220;rolling&#8221;, or <a title=\"Gall\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gall\">gall<\/a> formation. Three families are strictly <a title=\"Xylophagy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xylophagy\">xylophagous<\/a>, and called &#8220;<a title=\"Wood wasp\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wood_wasp\">wood wasps<\/a>&#8220;, and one family is parasitic. The larvae that do not feed externally on plants are grub-like, without prolegs. When harassed, many sawfly larvae are able to squirt a foul liquid from their last segment. <\/em>Excerpt from Wikipedia <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sawfly\">Read the full article on Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>How To Treat Roses Infected with Sawfly Larvae<\/h4>\n<p>My first choice of ridding the plant of the sawfly larvae is handpicking and destroying, one by one.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0take an empty water bottle on my morning walks and if I see any of the sawfly, they go into the bottle and\u00a0then thrown away. My goal is to rid my garden of the pest, so knocking them off the leaves and onto the ground is not an option. Also, encouraging\u00a0beneficial insects in your garden, such as green lacewings and ladybugs, is a priority. Place bird feeders\u00a0near the roses\u00a0to draw birds such as the Chickadees,\u00a0who will eat the sawfly larvae. Using these natural methods to destroy instead of spraying with chemicals will protect the beneficial insects, birds, and\u00a0pollinating bees from harmful chemicals found in sprays.<\/p>\n<div class=\"_209g _2vxa\" data-offset-key=\"25dfd-0-0\" data-block=\"true\" data-reactid=\".38.0.$right.0.0.0.0.1.0.0.1.0.0.$25dfd\"><span data-offset-key=\"25dfd-0-0\" data-reactid=\".38.0.$right.0.0.0.0.1.0.0.1.0.0.$25dfd.0:$25dfd-0-0\"><span data-reactid=\".38.0.$right.0.0.0.0.1.0.0.1.0.0.$25dfd.0:$25dfd-0-0.0\">If you missed early detection and you have a host of sawfly larvae, then you may need to spray. My choice is\u00a0watered down Neem Oil. Spray on the leaves, making sure to spray the underside of leaves,\u00a0and spray directly on the pests but do not spray on the blooms or buds. It could be harmful to pollinating bees. Cut back the damaged stems, clean the ground around the plants, and in a few weeks, with proper treatment,\u00a0your rosebush\u00a0will put on new leaves and blooms.
