Following is an interview from 2022 with Rick Karle, the Sports Director at WBRC FOX6 in Birmingham, Alabama. He has a Facebook page, Rick Karle Good News<\/a>, where he shares unique stories and then gives updates to the stories to keep readers informed.<\/p>\n

The Interview\/Story by Rick Karle<\/h2>\n

“I\u00a0 never thought I\u2019d read a cookbook from cover to cover. But the cookbook I just read is a bit different. Oh, there are simple recipes for biscuits and pies and cobbler and puddings. But this cookbook is about much more.Chelsea, Alabama\u2019s Sandi Herron has done it all. Born in Mississippi and raised in Bessemer, her family has been her life.<\/p>\n

So too has cooking.\u00a0From Mamaw to Papaw and later passed down to her children Jonathan and Briana, family recipes and family adventures are everything.<\/p>\n

Sandi Herron has worked for a Birmingham dentist.\u00a0She\u2019s worked as a graphic design artist.\u00a0She ran political campaigns.\u00a0She\u2019s worked at Liberty Baptist Church.<\/p>\n

Sandi Herron is also a gifted writer. So a few years back, it came to the now 70-year-old. She had survived breast cancer.\u00a0She had been married nearly 50 years.\u00a0Why not write a cookbook, but a cookbook with a twist?<\/p>\n

In between all of the recipes that have been handed down through the years, why not take readers on a family journey over hundreds of years?\u00a0And with that journey, why not include some entertaining stories about her family?<\/p>\n

It was 2018, and her chemo and radiation treatments were behind her. Sandi felt renewed and wanted to leave a family history to both her family and to us.\u00a0Thus, \u201cHarvest: Recipes, Stories & Memories Of A Southern Family Heritage\u201d was born.<\/p>\n

\u201cHarvest\u201d is a heartfelt adventure of Sandi\u2019s times in the fields and times in the kitchen. In her story, \u201cMamaw\u2019s Biscuits, Sandi writes:<\/p>\n

\u201cI enter Mamaw\u2019s house through the back door and see her standing at the counter in her galley-style kitchen.<\/div>\n
Her hands are deep in a bowl of flour, making buttermilk biscuits.<\/div>\n
She is wearing a red plaid apron and a blue floral dress, both handmade by her.<\/div>\n
I place a kiss on top of her head.<\/div>\n
She smiles and asks if I would like a biscuit.<\/div>\n
I turn up the glass and drink the sour, creamy liquid as I watch her add buttermilk into the flour mixture without measuring.<\/div>\n
From the window I see Pawaw seated in a swing, whittling and whistling ‘Amazing Grace.'”<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Through her down-home stories, Sandi has a way of taking us back to a simpler time.<\/div>\n
Her stories warm us even before the hot biscuits come out of the oven.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cEverything Mamaw bakes tastes good\u201d, writes Sandi.<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cMy favorite is her chocolate pie.\u00a0I know, because I found it earlier when I peeked under the aluminum foil cover.\u00a0Truth be told, I tasted it- just a small sampling while no one was looking.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI just love to write\u201d, Sandi tells me.\u00a0\u201cMy mother passed in 2008 and I have lost two brothers. I\u2019ve beaten cancer, and I\u2019ve been blessed to have been married to Jerome for 48 years. Did I tell you we met at the Alabama State Fair?\u00a0Now is the time to embrace a new adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandi Herron has lived a trying but blessed life. Today, her backyard Alabama gardens beckon her, and her family eats from the land. And now, she\u2019s offering us family recipes along with stories that are very familiar to our own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll never forget those days so long ago\u201d, writes Sandi. \u201cI remember what it took for Mamaw and Papaw to put food on our tables. I remember when a trip to the grocery store was not an option. Those were the days.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

I love to write, sew, quilt, craft, cook, paint, and always looking for new ideas to make or share. I love to use my camera to capture life and tell a story through pictures. I have a web and graphic design business that keeps me busy, but I love my work and enjoy interacting with my clients as together we see their vision become a reality. More than anything, my greatest passion is serving God in a way that others see Him through me.
