In my mother’s recipe files, I find all sorts of things tucked between the recipes. A lot of handwritten quotes, Scriptures, and yes, just her notes on baking or life.<\/p>\n

There are also clippings of funny stories.<\/p>\n

Through the years, as I organize her recipes for safekeeping, I read each one and either smile or laugh. There are times I shed tears as I become overwhelmed with the longing to be in the kitchen with her again, especially as holidays come around.<\/p>\n

This picture has her handwritten recipe for carrot cake, and it is worn and stained from years of use. It just wasn’t\u00a0 Thanksgiving dinner without her carrot cake. She loved to cook and prepare a feast for her family.<\/p>\n

Just when I feel a little sad, I find something tucked in her recipes that make me smile or laugh. Like this clipping from a old magazine I found.<\/p>\n

On the backside of the clipping is a recipe for pumpkin bars. I’m not sure, but something tells me it was the funny story and not the pumpkin bar recipe that made her tuck it in with her recipes. Or maybe both.<\/p>\n

The story I read on the magazine clipping gave me a good laugh and when I close my eyes, I can hear her laughing with me.<\/p>\n

My mama! She just keeps giving in so many ways.<\/p>\n

My three-year-old great-granddaughter observed her mother taking out the hem in one of her little dresses. She said, “Mommy, what are you doing to my dress?”
“Taking the hem out,” her mother answered.
“Are you going to take the him out and put in a her?” she asked.<\/p>\n

Pray<\/h2>\n

Father, help us remember good times when we are overwhelmed with sadness. Remind us of the joy and the blessing of family. Help us to never take for granted the moments we have on this earth but use those moments wisely and enjoy one another. When the time comes, fill our hearts with sweet memories of precious days that bring us hope and joy. In Jesus\u2019 name, Amen.<\/p>\n
